When it comes to comfort food, hearty dishes really hit the spot for me. When I wasn't eating pasta and pizza, I loved a gravy-covered Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes. But times have changed, my eating habits are very different these days. As the cold winter months set in, I decided to make a healthier version: Turkey Salisbury Steak in Mushroom Gravy!
It has become one of mine and my boyfriend's favorite low-calorie comfort dishes. It's really very tasty. I cooked the turkey in the gravy so it would pick up the great flavors and keep the ground turkey moist. It melds into a wonderful dish that is easy on your waistline. .
Typically I don't use gravy packets, but I wanted a thick sauce for this. Plus, I noticed that McCormick made a low-sodium version of their brown gravy, so I went for it. One tip I have for when adding the powder to the pan is to mix it with liquid first. This will help you get rid of the little powder pockets that make your flavors uneven. This is also good when you’re adding flour to thicken pan gravy.
Once you have it all mixed together well, it will infuse with the ingredients already in the pan very nicely. From gravy-soaked turkey steaks to gravy-soaked potatoes...yum!
Serve this with a nice salad and it makes a great dinner the whole family will enjoy.
What you get in the end is a delicious comfort meal that’s under 350 calories...not too shabby, if you ask me!
