I don’t know about you, but when I hear the words “sloppy Joe's,” I automatically think of a tasty sandwich that is going to make a mess everywhere! And I’m okay with that. Today I’m happy to share my recipe for turkey sloppy Joe’s with you.
I remember as a kid getting very excited when I heard there would be sloppy Joe’s. We didn’t get them often, so they were very special when we did.
Nowadays I am more aware of how sloppy Joes can be very high in calories due to the fact content of ground beef. However, when we swap it out for a lean meat like turkey, we save ourselves hundreds of calories. Plus, we get to welcome another food favorite back into our lives!
This recipe primarily uses pantry items. Things like seasonings and some canned goods were a few of the things I had on hand when I made this for the first time. It was one of those evenings where we couldn’t decide what we wanted and dinner was based solely on ingredients already in the house.
In the past, I have gotten those packets of flavoring for sloppy Joe’s, but after I began my weight loss journey, I started reading food labels. When I read this one, I was shocked at how much sodium they contained. I realized, like most things, sloppy Joe’s are much better when we make them ourselves. So I tinkered with ingredients until I got the right balance. It has a sweet, spicy, savory combination...so good!
I know that some people like to put cheese on there sloppy Joe’s, but here we have to omit the cheese as it’s extremely high in fat. But not to worry, the flavor is all there and does not taste like you sacrificed any calories at all.
Add some Turkey Sloppy Joes to your dinner menu this week!
